I think the number one thing when flying is to fly as comfortable as possible. This includes dressing comfortably and taking things that will ensure my flight goes as smoothly as possible.
From the top of my head, these are the items I consider my in-flight essentials*, most of which could apply to both genders.
- Facial wipes: Whether it be long or short haul, face wipes will always be a staple in my cabin bag. These are especially handy because the air inside the cabin can be quite drying. They are perfect for refreshing the face and neck after sitting in the plane for a number of hours. I like to use them right before landing so I don't look as dead.
- Lucas papaw ointment: This is a miracle product. It can be used topically for dry skin, burns, dry lips, bites...almost anything! It is one of my handy travel items that I always take overseas with me. I use it mainly as a lip balm.
- Roll on deodorant: I usually put this on before I leave the house but it is always useful if you have long flights and layovers. Nobody wants to feel sweaty and smelly on long haul flights, and nobody wants to sit next to someone who has 'expired' (unless that's your thing).
- Inflatable neck pillow: Seeing as I can't afford business class and their flat beds, I make the most of it with this pillow. It is convenient because you can use it throughout your whole trip whenever you are travelling and because it's deflatable when you don't need it.
- Ipad/Tablet: Great for passing time, especially on budget flights without entertainment systems. I usually use the Kindle app to read my ebooks but of course you can load movies and games on it before flying to keep you entertained.
- Painkillers: Sometimes the cabin pressure can give you headaches or 'Aerosinusitis'. You can relieve this by taking pain relief tablets. If your sinuses are frequently affected during air travel, it is handy to take a bottle of nasal decongestant spray.
- Earphones/headphones: This is a given. You'll always have babies crying or loud plane noises when you're flying. Even better if you have noise cancelling headphones. I usually take earphones just for portability.
- Pen: A simple item that is often overlooked! You'll need this to fill in your entrance visa before landing. You can use it for doodling to pass time as well. Some planes don't offer pens and Air stewards aren't going to like it when a whole plane is asking for one either. Save yourself the hassle.
- Portable mobile charger: For longer flights, if you're listening to music or using your tablet a lot (see #5), it is useful to have a tiny portable charger (unless you're lucky enough to fly with Emirates). You can avoid having dead batteries in the air and when you land.
- Toothbrush: Avoiding zombie breath and keeping oral hygiene is still important in the air. Some airlines will give you tiny toothbrushes and toothpastes. More essential for long haul/overnight flights.
- Big scarf: This doubles as a blanket sheet or a wrap if the air con gets too cold. Very handy if you're travelling into colder climates. As soon as you land you can wrap the scarf around yourself and TA-DA! Instant warmth and Fah-Shun.
- Small brush: I have pretty long hair so a small brush will come into handy to tame my lion's mane after I wake up.
- Cardigan: Like the big scarf, a cardigan or light jacket is to keep warm if the air con gets too cold. Add this to the scarf and you'll be nice and warm when you sleep.
This is my general list for my in-flight essentials but could change depending on what type of flight I'm on, which airline I'm flying with and what climate I'm flying into. What do you have in your list of in-flight essentials? Please leave a comment!
Thanks for reading!
